The first thing that you need to consider is how many chickens or hens you are building the chicken coop for? Many times people make the mistake of building it too small. You need to make sure that it is large enough to accommodate all of your chickens, otherwise they won't be very healthy and it won't be good for you in the long run. If you ultimately want healthy chickens and the best eggs, building a bigger coop is better if you have the space to do so.
Another thing that is very important to think about when you construct a chicken coop is ho you are going to get access to it. If it is not properly designed, this could pose a problem for you on a day to day basis. You obviously need easy access to clean the coop, collect any eggs, feed the chickens, and other such things.
After you have determined the size of the chicken coop that you are going to be building, the next thing to do is figure out where you are going to put it. This will prevent other animals from getting at your chickens, either over the fence, or getting through under the fence. If you have predatory birds in your area, it may also be a good idea to have wire mesh on top. This will not only serve to keep your chickens safe from any dangerous predators but will also protect them from various diseases spread by other animals.
